Suspect on trial is accused of shooting through his ex-girlfriend’s window, killing the man inside

A suspect on trial for murder is accused of firing a shot outside his ex-girlfriend’s bedroom window in the dark, piercing the glass and killing a man who was inside her home.

25-year-old Troy Cheek Jr. is charged with murder in the shooting at West End Crossing Apartments near Phelan in Dowlen. 23-year-old Aaron Robert died at the scene.

If Cheek is convicted in Judge John Stevens’ courtroom, he faces life in prison.

KFDM/Fox4 News has obtained an affidavit for Cheek’s arrest on murder charges, and a detective who investigated the case says Cheek admitted to firing the shot. His ex-girlfriend was not injured.

Beaumont Police responded to a shooting victim call Saturday, February 24 around 10:45 p.m.

According to police, officers spoke with a woman who said she heard a crash while she was in her bedroom. She noticed her boyfriend, Aaron Robert, had been shot. Officers checked on Robert and discovered he had died of a gunshot wound to the head.

Police say evidence at the scene showed a gunman fired one shot through the woman’s bedroom window from a parking lot on the north side of the complex. A single 9mm shell casing was found a few meters away from the bedroom window.

According to police, the woman told officers that she had recently broken up with Troy Cheek, “and that he had not handled the breakup properly.” Police say he was listed as a suspect in a burglary in which he allegedly broke into the woman’s apartment and damaged her property. She stated that she had received a call from him prior to the shooting, and after she told him not to call her again, he said, “I’m going to show you.”

After the shooting, officers familiar with the events traveled to another address and found Cheek sitting on the porch of a home. The affidavit states, “Cheek was confronted by officers and began yelling at his family not to let the officers search the home.” Police say Cheek was detained and investigators contacted a family member. They told the family member they were investigating a shooting and asked for permission to search the home and vehicle. The police say they have received written permission.

During the search, officers discovered a purple SCCY 9mm handgun hidden in a compartment in the bathroom of the home. The gun was next to a red T-shirt.

Police interviewed a friend who said Cheek had been with a group that day from about 3 p.m. until he was dropped off at the house around 10 p.m. The friend described seeing Cheek handling a purple gun. The friend also described having conversations with Cheek in which he complained about the breakup and said, “I’m going to show her.”

According to the PC, detectives later interviewed Cheek, and after he was Mirandized, he admitted to shooting a bullet through the bedroom window.
