Private ankle monitoring system under fire after Mobile man allegedly committed murder while on bail

Private ankle monitoring system under fire after Mobile man allegedly committed murder while on bail

MOBILE, Ala. (WALA) – A mobile man on bond for murder is accused of committing another murder.

Mobile Police: Suspect in Dauphin Street murder arrested

Investigators say Zyyon Sanders Joseph Evans Jr. shot Dauphin Gate Apartments Monday evening.

Sanders allegedly drained the battery in his ankle monitor before committing the crime.

Now the private electronic monitoring company is under fire again.

Circuit Court President Judge Wesley Pipes identified the company as Accupoint and said there have been problems in the past.

District Attorney Keith Blackwood says he has deep concerns about how this crime happened.

“It’s just an absolute worst-case scenario that everyone in the community is afraid of,” Blackwood said.

Sanders was arrested Wednesday morning following a search warrant in the area of Bankhead Street and Euclid Avenue.

The victim’s family say they are furious after finding out he was already out on bond for murder.

“How many times does it take for someone to kill someone? How many chances will he get, just like the second time?” Joseph Evans Sr. said. “ItIt will be the third time someone’s family has experienced what I and the first family experienced. So I hope that justice is served.”

Nyyon Sanders is charged with the murder of 25-year-old Joseph Evans Jr.

According to Blackwood, Sanders should not have been in that area in the first place.

“From what I understand, Sanders had his ankle monitor go out after 5 p.m. and within four hours he had committed the murder,” Blackwood said.

Background of the private ankle monitoring system

Last month, Accupoint came under fire after a murder suspect violated the conditions of his release by going to a casino in Mississippi.

The mobile electronic monitoring company failed to report the suspect’s murder violations, the prosecutor said

Judge Wesley Pipes says it is “certainly an option” to cut ties with Accupoint in the near future.

Judge will not use electronic monitoring company accused of failure to report violation

Pipes says he contacted the company Wednesday afternoon. He says his office is working to find out what happened through multiple agencies.

He went on to say that they have been exploring different options for the best way to electronically monitor people with deposits for some time.

Zyyon Sanders criminal history

According to MPD, Sanders had a bond of one Murder from 2022 he allegedly committed it together with his brother Kevin Sanders.

Bond denied for man accused of Navco Road murder

Court documents show that bond has been revoked for both brothers.

Court documents also say the brothers were together during both alleged crimes.

Documents say the brother has not been charged in the November murder, but that he violated his bond by allegedly driving with Nyyon to an area outside his authorized travel area.

Blackwood calls this a failure of the private ankle monitoring system.

He says the company would not have been notified that Sanders’ battery was dead until 8 a.m. the next morning.

“Yet another case where you have a private ankle monitoring company that is tasked with monitoring someone who is out on bail,” Blackwood said. “That did not happen in this case and this suspect would have committed murder again.”

The DA says he’s ready for the sheriff to take over, but it all comes down to money.

“It all comes down to funding for our law enforcement agency to be able to take on this task,” he said. “You need staff for that, you need to have the equipment. The sheriff’s office is once again ready, willing and able to take this on.”

FOX10 News has reached out to Accupoint in the past but never heard back.

The trial for the 2022 murder will begin on January 13, 2025.
