7 body parts found in Purbachal: Victim identified as 59-year-old businessman

The seven body parts found yesterday in Purbachal Lake in Rupganj upazila of Narayanganj have been identified as that of 59-year-old businessman Jasimuddin Masum, police said.

The victim’s family identified the body at the Narayanganj General Hospital mortuary last night.

Jasimuddin, a resident of Bashundhara residential area in Dhaka, went missing on Sunday. His eldest son submitted a missing diary to Gulshan police station the next day, said Abdullah Al Masud, Additional Superintendent of Police (Crime) of Narayanganj.

According to the deceased’s family members, he left his home in Bashundhara in his own car on Sunday afternoon. He left his car in Gulshan area and said he was going to his paint factory. He spoke to his wife on the phone for the last time that evening around 11 p.m.

The deceased’s younger son Saiful Islam Sihab said they found the body at the Narayanganj General Hospital mortuary last night based on information from the police.

“My father went out in his private car on Sunday afternoon. He left the car at Gulshan and told the driver that he was going to Narayanganj in another car. Then, at 10.30 am, my father spoke to my mother through mobile phone. Since he did not return that evening, my mother tried to call him in the morning on his two mobile numbers but could not reach him because the numbers found were switched off.’

Jasimuddin’s family members have no idea why he was murdered so brutally.

“I’m not sure my father had any conflict with anyone,” Sihab said.

Additional SP Abdullah Al Masood said, “A case has been filed in Rupganj police station in this regard. Police have some leads and are conducting operations to nab the killers.”

According to police and locals, a rickshaw puller first noticed a smell coming from the lake next to the 90-metre road last morning and called the locals. Locals then found the body parts in plastic bags. Following information, the police rushed to the spot and found the body parts.

However, according to Rupganj Police Station Officer-in-Charge Liaqat Ali, two body parts of the deceased could not be found.

“We believe the man was murdered at least three days earlier and the body parts were dumped in the lake after being wrapped in three separate polybags.”
