Nashville is preparing cold weather overflow shelters as temperatures drop

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WTVF) – The Nashville Office of Homeless Services is preparing to help unhoused people stay warm as temperatures dip below freezing.

The Nashville Office of Homeless Services has announced that their Overflow Cold Weather Shelter will activate when temperatures drop at or below 32 degrees for three hours.

This year they have some new additions to offer to more people.

They will still offer hot meals as in years past, but will now also offer on-site triage services to help people find permanent housing, pet accommodation and community alerts via a text message system.

The overflow shelter is usually not used until primary shelters, such as the Nashville Rescue Mission and the Room In the Inn, are full.

The shelter is located at 3230 Brick Church Pike, in north Nashville.

WeGo provides rides to the shelters. There are also shuttles from important places in the city. Shuttle buses transport passengers to Music City Central, so those needing shelter can ride the number 23B bus to the shelter.

They’ll offer a sneak peek of the shelter on Friday.

It won’t be open to the public, but News Channel 5’s Eric Pointer will be there live and give a first-hand look at the new resources and speak with Office of Homeless Services leadership about how they hope to help people.
