Russian soldiers who suffered minimal injuries during the war in Ukraine will be paid less after President Vladimir Putin approved an order on Thursday allowing a reduction in compensation.

The country needs more soldiers to achieve greater profits
Ukraine and for that reason the government has sometimes increased payments for those placed on the battlefield to stimulate mobilization. The current compensation amount is 3 million rubles (almost $29,000).

Generous payments for volunteers have helped Russia avoid another nationwide mobilization after a troubled campaign led to a mass exodus of people to neighboring countries in 2022.

How much do soldiers get paid now?

When the new order is announced, a three-tiered compensation scale will be introduced, with a soldier being paid based on their level of injury.

The “most” seriously injured will continue to receive the 3 million rubles, while a soldier for a “minor” injury will receive 1 million rubles (almost $10,000). “Other minor injuries” still earn a soldier 100,000 rubles ($960), according to TASS.

However, the decision does not specify how the severity of an injury will be classified. There is also no mention of how much money the government will save by reducing compensation.

Earlier this month, Anna Tsivileva, Putin’s deputy defense minister and distant cousin, after visiting a Moscow hospital and speaking to soldiers and doctors who raised the idea, raised the question of how to distribute compensation more fairly can be.
