Brian Sorensen press conference: Everton vs Liverpool preview

Everton boss Brian Sorensen says his side “desperately” want to beat neighbors Liverpool when the teams meet at Goodison Park in the Women’s Super League on Sunday (kick-off 3pm GMT).

The Toffees are preparing to play there for the last time and Sorenson says “everyone wants to be in this iconic stadium and play in a derby”.

“When I started watching English football as a young child, you always heard how tough it was to go and play at Goodison Park. It’s legendary,” he added.

Everton are yet to win at the famous stadium and are still looking for their first win of the season.

“We really want to win this. It’s a derby, but we also want to get the first win of the season. We hope to achieve that success and kick-start the season.”

Here are more key lines from his press conference:

  • Conceding within 30 seconds against Crystal Palace was “not fun” but Sorensen praised his side’s “great character” for fighting back.

  • After Honoka Hayashi scored Everton’s first goal through one of their own players, he said: “The amount of grass she covers on the pitch is unreal. She is such a composed player. We are trying to give her more of these opportunities. ” “

  • He added: “She is such a lovely player to work with, so humble, always has a smile on her face and is never in a bad mood. She is a fantastic person but an even better footballer.”

  • Of Liverpool, he said: “We won’t be far apart on Sunday when it really matters, but they probably have a bit more depth. We need to be very solid for 90 minutes.”

  • Lucy Hope is “dealing with another issue” after missing last week through injury, but Sorensen is hopeful she can be available.
