Man seriously injured Wednesday in car crash in Wyandotte County

KANSAS CITY, Kan. (WIBW) – A man was seriously injured in a collision between a car and a semi-trailer on a Wyandotte County highway Wednesday morning, authorities said.

The collision was reported at 8:13 a.m. Wednesday on northbound Interstate 635 just south of the Kansas River.

According to the Kansas Highway Patrol, the crash occurred when a 2022 International tractor-trailer merged onto I-635 from Highway K-32. The trailer shifted, causing it to cross all lanes before hitting the center median wall.

The semi then veered to the right, where it struck a 2005 Honda Accord. The semi then continued to the right and struck the outer barrier wall before coming to a stop.

The driver of the Honda, Dinier I. Matute Funez, 31, of Kansas City, Kansas, was taken to a local hospital for treatment of serious injuries. The patrol said Funez was wearing his seat belt.

The driver of the semi, Roberta L. Brightwell, 53, of Gladstone, Mo., was reported uninjured. The patrol said Brightwell was wearing her seat belt.

According to the patrol, both drivers were alone in their vehicles.
