California police officer injured in shootout with gunman

A Harbor Police officer was injured Wednesday morning during a shootout in Little Italy as officers searched for a gunman who shot two people — one fatally — a short time earlier and less than a mile away.

The officer and the gunman were both taken to hospitals in Hillcrest, San Diego police Lt. Daniel Meyer said. He had no information about the condition of either the officer or the suspect.

Just after 8:20 a.m., police responded to a shooting at the corner of West A Street and Union Street, police officials said. Officers found a man and a woman shot. One of them was dead.

Washington Elementary School on State Street in Little Italy was placed on lockdown as officers spread out looking for a shooter.

About 45 minutes later, Harbor Police — who joined the search — spotted a person matching the suspect’s description, Meyer said.

The gunman and several police officers opened fire, Meyer said. One officer was shot at least once.

According to police radio traffic, the suspect was “down” and a gun was seen near the subject’s left hand.

According to scanner traffic, bullets were discovered in a building on Kettner Boulevard near Juniper Street, but no one was injured there.
