Edgaras Jucikas, 28, had to be rescued from a ditch near Littleport after his car rolled over

An ‘extremely lucky’ motorist who had to be rescued from a water-filled ditch in the Fens has been convicted of drink driving.

Edgaras Jucikas, 28, of Beck Row, Suffolk, admitted drinking about four pints of beer before the crash on Westmoor Drove on June 14.

A witness told police they saw Jucikas’ car drive off the road and into the ditch, where the car was found overturned and partially submerged.

He admitted drink-driving, driving while disqualified, driving without insurance, breaching his community order, failing to appear – and having a Class C license.

On Monday, magistrates in Norwich sentenced Jucikas to four years in prison and disqualified him from driving for four and a half years.

Police said they conducted a roadside breath test after the crash and Jucikas blew 75, just over twice the legal limit of 35 micrograms per 100 ml of breath.

PC Baillie Morgan-Heritage said: “Jucikas is extremely lucky to be here today.

“If a member of the public had not seen his vehicle leave the road he could have gone into the ditch without anyone knowing or getting help.

“Drinking affects your reaction time, your vision and your ability to concentrate. As Jucikas has shown, drunk drivers endanger their lives by getting behind the wheel, not to mention the lives of other road users.”
