Ocean Winds submits a planning application for a 2 GW offshore wind farm

Ocean Winds (OW) has submitted its first onshore planning consent application to Aberdeenshire Council for the 2GW Caledonia offshore wind project in Scotland.

This follows the completion of the project’s Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA).

The onshore component of the project includes a substation and underground cables, essential for transporting the power generated by the offshore wind farm.

OW Caledonia onshore consent manager Ruaridh Danaher said: “This is the biggest milestone of the project, after three years of work developing the project and completing the environmental impact assessment.

“Our intensive investment in the early stages of the project means this is a high-quality application, based on robust data, reflecting the needs of our stakeholders.

“To ensure the project can be fully considered by our stakeholders, the environmental impact assessment covers both onshore and offshore infrastructure.”

OW noted that Aberdeenshire Council has also launched a formal public consultation on the application, marking a key stage in the development of the project.

The project, if approved, will be Ocean Winds’ third venture in the Moray Firth area, following the operational Moray East and the recently powered Moray West.

With the addition of Caledonia, total offshore wind capacity in the Moray Firth is expected to double.

OW Caledonia project director Mark Baxter said: “I would like to thank everyone who helped us achieve this important milestone – especially our stakeholders in the Moray Firth.

“The EIA report contains a tremendous amount of information that reflects the needs of our stakeholders, and reflects our policy of investing early in information to develop a high-quality application for robust consent.

“Caledonia is one of the few ScotWind projects that can be built at high speed and with little risk in a location where offshore wind energy is already present and can therefore be an important part of the UK’s Clean Power by 2030 plans government.”

Last month, OW and Universidade Federal do Rio Grande do Norte signed an agreement memorandum of understanding to increase Brazil’s offshore wind energy capabilities.
