Video: Texas police stop fleeing armed man who carjacked two vehicles

Texas police shot and killed a fleeing gunman with an extensive criminal record who pointed a gun at officers after carjacking two vehicles earlier this month.

The incident began shortly after 3 a.m. on Nov. 7 when Bee Cave police spotted a pickup truck driving erratically at a high rate of speed. KTBC-TV reports. Dashboard and body camera footage of the incident was released Wednesday during a joint news conference with Austin police.

When police stopped the vehicle, the driver waited for the officer to exit the cruiser before driving away. A chase ensued, with the suspect leading the way during part of the chase.

A Travis County sheriff’s deputy was contacted for backup, but the pursuit ended when authorities lost sight of the vehicle. Using the license plate number to contact the owner, officers discovered the driver was the owner’s 27-year-old son, who was armed and had made comments about self-harm.

After the chase, the suspect, identified as Zachary Labrie, traveled to his ex-girlfriend’s Austin apartment. A doorbell camera recorded a masked Labrie kicking in the door.

“He has a history with her of domestic violence, including strangulation,” Austin Police Chief Lisa Davis said during the news conference. ‘She wasn’t home at the time. She was actually out of town for fear that she had done that.”

An hour after that burglary, Labrie carjacked an employee in a Starbucks parking lot in Austin. After that incident, Labrie carjacked another vehicle in an HEB parking lot.

Austin police gathered at Labrie’s ex-girlfriend’s apartment, where the suspect had returned.

When police arrived, Labrie began fleeing on foot. During the chase, he pointed a gun at officers, who opened fire.

Labrie was struck by gunfire and he was pronounced dead at the scene. According to police, Labrie was released from jail on October 29 and was fitted with an ankle monitor, which he removed during the incident.

The shooting is under investigation.
