Free birth control available at over 300 locations in Michigan

Free contraceptives are now available at more than 300 locations through a program for Michigan residents.

Governor Gretchen Whitmer announced that over-the-counter oral contraceptive pills, emergency contraception, condoms and family planning educational resources are available through the Take Control of Your Birth Control program.

“Everyone deserves the freedom to make their own decisions about their reproductive health,” Whitmer said. “With more than 300 locations in Michigan now offering free contraception, emergency contraception and other essential reproductive health care resources, we are taking action to ensure all Michigan residents get the support they need. Decisions about reproductive health care should be made between a woman, her doctor, and her trusted community. In Michigan, we must always protect your fundamental right to control your health and your future.

Where can you find free contraception?

These resources are available in every county in Michigan.

Locations participating in this program include community partners, Michigan Department of Health and Human Services offices, local health departments and community health centers.

A interactive map of the locations was created to give residents more information about how and where they can obtain the resources.

The Take Control of Your Birth Control program also provides Michigan residents with information on how to obtain supplies in the future.

Residents will receive information on how to use insurance to obtain low-cost or free contraception, and anyone without insurance will receive information on how to apply for Medicaid and Plan first! coverage.

These programs provide coverage for services such as contraception and STD testing.

Plan first! covers family planning services for people who do not qualify for traditional Medicaid.

“The goal of this program is to ensure that individuals, regardless of their circumstances, have access to tools that allow them to make their own decisions about their health and future,” said Dr. Natasha Bagdasarian, Chief Medical Executive of the State of Michigan. “We appreciate the overwhelming support we have received from organizations willing to help distribute free contraceptives to individuals. We want to ensure that individuals who need and want these tools can easily obtain them. This campaign reflects the state’s ongoing commitment to ensuring equitable access to reproductive health care.”
