Yonkers high school on lockdown after student injured in knife incident

YONKER, NY – Gorton High School was placed on lockdown Thursday morning after a student brought a knife into the building, leading to a confrontation that left one person injured, Yonkers police said. Authorities say the student responsible is in custody and there is no ongoing threat to students or staff.

The incident, which took place earlier in the day, resulted in a single injury. Police said the injured student is in stable condition and Yonkers Public School officials are in contact with the student’s family.

As a precaution, Gorton High School remains on lockdown while police continue their investigation. The school has barred families from picking up students until the building is fully secured and the lockdown is lifted, a measure officials expect to complete soon. Once the measure is lifted, classes will resume as planned for the remainder of the school day.

“We are taking every measure to ensure the safety of all students and staff,” the Yonkers Police Department said in a statement on social media, assuring the community that additional updates will be provided as information becomes available.
