It said completion of the new acute facility was expected by the end of 2028.

The government said the new hospital would include an emergency department, intensive care, women’s and children’s services, elective and emergency operating theatres, and any inpatient wards where an overnight stay was required.

Deputy Health and Social Services Minister Tom Binet said he was “very pleased” with the completion of the demolition.

He said: “Islanders have long needed modern healthcare facilities, and while the road to reaching this stage has been long, we are now witnessing real, tangible progress.”

Binet said he was confident that Members of Parliament would approve the budget for phase one of the program during a budget debate scheduled to begin on November 26.

He also said he was confident the planning commission would grant the project the necessary approvals.

“With their support, we can finally look forward to breaking ground on this long-awaited project next year,” said Binet.

Constable Andy Jehan, Minister for Infrastructure, said the removal of the former buildings has “paved the way for the construction of a new chapter of healthcare facilities in Overdale”.

He said: “I look forward to starting construction next year.”
