A Scottish couple who lost their cat were ‘shocked’ when the cat turned up 300 miles away in Coventry.

Beans, a red and white cat, went missing late last month after leaving his home in Cumbernauld Glasgow.

Owners Cara and Colin McBurnie searched the area but found no trace of Beans, leaving the couple fearing the worst.

Ms McBurnie said Beans “just went out because he likes to wander around” but said he “always comes home for something to eat, usually after a few hours”.

“We searched and searched, searched everywhere,” the 40-year-old added. ‘I’ve been out every day, but I thought something must have happened to him.

“I didn’t really expect to see him again, but joined many local lost and found Facebook pages, and then further afield in Scotland.”

Weeks later, the McBurnies received a call from the charity Cats Protection, who said that thanks to the microchip, Beans had been found safe in Coventry – hundreds of miles away.

Kelly Ryan, who spotted the wayward cat, said she saw Beans hanging around her outdoor litter box.

She said: “I didn’t feed him straight away as I thought he was probably my property, but one night I saw him sleeping in the litter box and he was still there the next day, and then that same night.

“I only gave him a few cookies at first, but I heard that he was also visiting other neighbors and it felt like he was around too much and something wasn’t quite right.”

Ms Ryan posted about the missing cat online and was contacted by Cats Protection, who then contacted Ms McBurnie.

The next day, Beans was reunited with his owners. It is still unknown how the cat was able to travel so far.

Mrs McBurnie said: “I was shocked that he was still alive and that he had traveled more than 300 miles.”

She added: “I’m so glad we got him microchipped and updated his details. Otherwise he would never have come back to us.”
