Firefighters knocked down a building fire that extended to a second building and “threatened a group of homes” in Plymouth on Wednesday evening, officials said.

Cold and windy conditions fueled the fire, endangering homes near Alden Street. This is evident from a statement from the Plymouth Fire Departmentbut the fire brigade was able to intervene and prevent the disease from spreading.

A unprecedented number of forest fires have burned across Massachusetts in recent weeks, largely due to a combination of weather and drought conditions.

Upon arrival just after 7 p.m., Plymouth emergency responders encountered “heavy fire” in a two-story garage building behind 14 Alden St., the statement said. Crews immediately raised a second alarm and called for more resources.

The fire spread to an outbuilding on the same property and ignited a brush fire 500 feet away, authorities said.

“The businesses that arrived first quickly made the decision to call in reinforcements and having all that manpower made all the difference,” Chief Neil Foley said in the statement. “(Additional crews) were able to contain the fire to the outbuildings and avoid the occupied buildings.”

About five other homes were at risk of being affected by the fire, Foley said, but they ultimately were not affected.

Most of the fire was extinguished within an hour, the department said. There were no injuries and no one was displaced.

Firefighters from Bourne, Carver, Duxbury and Kingston assisted Plymouth crews.
