Fire destroys several rooms at John Wesley College

A fire at John Wesley College in Raiwaqa, Suva, has destroyed the engineering salon, science and computer labs, home economics room and staff room.

The incident started around 10am

National Fire Service Chief Director Puamau Sowane acknowledged that fire engines arrived late on the scene.

He says if the trucks had arrived earlier, the buildings could have been saved.

Sowane also expressed disappointment over the behavior of some students roaming the area.

He stressed the importance of student safety and called for the implementation of proper fire safety guidelines.

Police and fire brigade remain on site.

Meanwhile, Year 12 students are still working on their exams.

Fortunately, all other students and staff were safely evacuated.
