Indiana Latino Institute hosts the 13th annual Education Summit to empower Latino students

SOUTH BEND, Ind. (WNDU) – Local and regional schools filled the Century Center on Thursday for the Indiana Latino Institute’s 13th annual Education Summit.

The event unites students, educators and community leaders from across Indiana with opportunities that shape the futures of Latino youth. Whether their plans include college or a fulfilling career, this educational summit had something to offer the more than 2,000 students in attendance.

“There are two main goals for this: learning how to apply for scholarships, and the second is what careers are available, what are the schools in Indiana,” explains Marlene Dotson, president and CEO of the Indiana Latino Institute. “We want our students to go to school here in Indiana, stay here and work here because these students in the next four years, especially those in their senior year, are our future workforce.”

Students attended workshop sessions that focused on college readiness, leadership skills and career paths. There was also a college and career fair.

Students met with representatives from colleges and companies who provided insight into programs and career opportunities, in addition to networking with professionals and mentors.

“I think because there aren’t many Latinos, because I’m the only one in most of my classes, I hope that more Hispanics will pursue education to improve their lives,” said Angela Rico, a student attending the ILI Educational Summit attended. .

Students enjoyed lunch and left with goodies from colleges and employers across the state.

Tomorrow, some of these students will play key roles, whether locally, statewide and even nationally.

“My parents have supported me all the way here, so I really want to make something of myself,” said Andres Rosas, another student who attended the summit.
