Container truck driver arrested in Malaysia after 1 killed, 2 injured in highway crash

KLUANG – Police have arrested a truck driver involved in a three-vehicle accident that killed a 33-year-old Malaysian man and injured a married couple in Kluang, Johor.

Kluang Deputy OCPD Chief Inspector Nik Mohd Azmi Husin said the accident at KM69.5 of the North-South Expressway is believed to have occurred when the container truck driver lost control of his vehicle and crashed into a highway divider.

The truck was carrying a container filled with fertilizer and was heading to Johor Bahru from Kluang when the 40-year-old driver lost control of the vehicle.

The truck crashed into the metal divider in the middle of the road and capsized along with the container it was carrying, he said in a press statement on November 15.

He said the rear of the truck was then struck by a car traveling on the roadway, while a motorcycle crashed into the overturned container.

The car driver and motorcyclist were unable to stop the vehicle in time to avoid a collision with the trailer and container.

The motorcyclist suffered serious head and body injuries and died on the spot.

Meanwhile, a 25-year-old man driving the car suffered injuries to his legs and body, while his 26-year-old wife suffered injuries to her head.

Their one-year-old baby was also in the car but was unharmed, he said.

Chief Inspector Nik Mohd Azmi said the truck driver, who was also not injured, was arrested to assist in the investigation under section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987.

It was previously reported that one man was killed while two others were injured in a three-vehicle crash involving a trailer.

Photos and videos of the accident, which occurred around 7:30 a.m. on November 15, have been circulating on social media.

This accident occurred just two days after a similar incident in Bukit Mertajam, Penang resulted in the death of a woman and seriously injured a 25-year-old man.

In the incident on November 13, the 21-year-old was killed when the car she was traveling in was crushed by a container at the Jalan Bukit Tengah traffic light junction. THE STAR/ASIA NEWS NETWORK
