Man convicted of rape twice in South Korea gets 15 years in prison for third rape

SEOUL: A man in South Korea who was convicted of rape at the age of 20 and again at the age of 30 has been sentenced to prison again for rape at the age of 45.

The Seoul High Court on November 13 upheld an earlier court ruling that imposed a 15-year prison sentence on the defendant, surnamed Kim. It also ordered him to wear an electronic ankle monitor for 20 years after his release.

“The initial statement does not seem too heavy or too light. It is proportionate to the crime,” the court said in its judgment.

Kim was convicted of chasing a woman, a complete stranger, to her home in Songpa-gu in southern Seoul and raping her on January 1. He asked the court to suspend his sentence and said he would like to try to reach a plea agreement. with the victim, but the request was denied.

Kim has previously ended up behind bars for sex crimes. He was sentenced to seven years in prison for rape in 2006. He was later found guilty again of breaking into a woman’s home and raping her in 2016, serving eight years in prison.

This latest crime occurred just five months after he was released from prison after serving a prison sentence for the 2016 rape. He was wearing an electronic ankle monitor at the time of the sexual assault.
