A 91-year-old grandmother robbed by a Syrian asylum seeker has bravely revealed she was ‘so scared’ during the attack she ‘couldn’t scream’.

Christa Ohlsson was pushed down a flight of stairs by 26-year-old suspected rapist Karam Kanjo – who denies involvement – in a violent attack that has reignited Sweden’s debate on migration.

Shocking photos show the extent of her injuries – deep cuts to her neck and throat, as well as horrific bruises on her arms and legs when she fell down the stairs after being pushed by Kanjo, who was jailed for five years and is now being deported. the heartless attack.

Ms Ohlsson bravely described her ordeal, saying in a statement: ‘I couldn’t understand what was happening. I was so scared; I closed my eyes and couldn’t scream.

‘I remember someone came from behind and grabbed my two chains and then suddenly I was on the floor and fell down the stairs, it all happened so quickly.

‘I lost my hearing aid in the fall so I couldn’t hear anything but I felt around on the ground and found it, the man stood over me and yanked my chains, it was so violent my head and back were taken off the floor.’

Mrs Ohlsson, who was on her way to visit her late husband’s grave, fell down nine concrete steps during the attack. In recent weeks it emerged that Kanjo – who arrived in Sweden during the 2015 migrant crisis – was on parole for rape.

Kanjo had been jailed for two years and six months in 2021 but was released in late 2022 after the sex attack, which also took place in Sollentuna, and his long record of previous convictions includes theft and drug possession.

Ms Ohlsson said of the robbery that took place last August at the Sollentuna train station on the outskirts of Stockholm that the two stolen necklaces were a 50th birthday present from her husband.

Ms Ohlsson told the Attunda court: ‘I couldn’t swallow properly for a few days and could only eat soup because my throat hurt so much.

‘I didn’t actually see the person who attacked me, it all happened so quickly, I just remember feeling the two chains tighten and then them being ripped away from me. I was on my way to visit my husband’s grave when it happened.’

Speaking about the robbery that took place last August at the Sollentuna train station on the outskirts of Stockholm, Ms Ohlsson said the two stolen necklaces were a 50th birthday present from her husband and were made of gold – one of which had a pendant with a photo of her and him in it – and were valued at 107,000 Swedish kronor.

Police have searched pawn shops and gold dealers across Stockholm since the robbery, but have so far failed to find the necklaces that Mrs Ohlsson said were “heirlooms and memories” of her husband.

She added that the attack had left her ‘terrified’ and ‘afraid to go outside’, but she slowly started to regain her confidence and started ‘using the train again, but not at night’.

Ms Ohlsson said: ‘The attack left me stressed and unable to sleep well for a long time. My daughter came to stay with me for a while and at first I said I would never catch the train again.

‘I also turned down a birthday invitation because I was too scared to go out, but now I’m starting to feel good again, although my knee and hip still hurt a little from the bruising, especially when I walk.

“I also wondered if anyone was looking at me, how did they know I had these two necklaces? I also thought I would never go out alone again and now when I hear a strange noise I get scared.’

CCTV footage shown in court and obtained by MailOnline shows the man, believed to be Kanjo, entering Sollentuna train station wearing a green jacket and striking bright blue Adidas sneakers at 10.06am on August 29.

For the next 71 minutes he acts suspiciously as he walks along platforms and at 11.19am cameras pick him up walking behind Ms Ohlsson in an underpass at the station.

He is seen following her as she climbs the stairs to catch a train to the cemetery where her husband is buried, before running in front of her and trying to grab the chains.

A fellow commuter watches in shock and steps aside as the attacker and his helpless victim tumble down the stairs with him, with him initially sitting on the ground and attempting to snatch the heirlooms before standing over her and using attracts violence.

Less than a minute after the attack, he is seen running away along an underpass before turning to pick up his mobile phone, which fell from his pocket and can clearly be seen on the ground in one image.

At no point does he check on his victim and as he escapes, he pushes another woman aside before running away, eventually being arrested five days later at a nearby hostel after detectives recognized him from the CCTV footage.

During interrogation, Kanjo denied any involvement in the robbery and told the officers, “Do you think God made only one person who looks like me?”

To which the officer replied, “I can’t answer that, but you are wearing blue Adidas sneakers and a green jacket that are identical to the clothing we found in photos on your cell phone.”

At one point he even said brutally to the police: “If I had seen someone attack an old lady like that, I would have intervened myself, you don’t want me, I didn’t do anything.”

During the trial, prosecutor Susanne Rassam described the attack as “extremely brutal and violent” and that Kanjo had “ruthlessly exploited his victim’s vulnerability and defenselessness.”

Documents shown in court showed that there were no large deposits in Kanjo’s bank account after the theft – with the only credit being 1,030 kroner in benefits from the Swedish social security system.

It later emerged that Kanjo had not initially been deported following his 2021 rape conviction as he had already been in the country for six years and when the court told him after his latest conviction that he would be sent back to Syria, he claimed that he would ‘be ‘. tortured’.

In 2019, a Swedish Supreme Court ruling ruled that there must be “extraordinary reasons” to deport someone who has lived in the country for more than four years.

Kanjo was convicted of aggravated robbery and possession of drugs and knives – found in his hotel room after his arrest – with the judge ruling that he had a ‘very weak’ link with Sweden as he ruled that after serving his sentence would be thrown out.

Outside her home, Mrs Ohlsson’s son-in-law told MailOnline: ‘She is doing better now, but she doesn’t want to talk to anyone else about what happened.

‘She explained it all in court and it was very hard for her, especially the first few weeks after it happened, she was very traumatised, she couldn’t eat and my wife was with her for a few days but now she’s starting to to suffer. getting her life back on track, she is brave and will move on.”
