Ryanair passengers left ‘out of pocket’ after airline wrongly told customers their flights had been cancelled

Ryanair passengers have lost money after being wrongly told their flights had been cancelled.

A number of holidaymakers reported receiving an email from the airline on Thursday evening about canceled flights – which had been sent in error.

Flights to and from Scotland were among those affected at airports such as Edinburgh and Glasgow.

Ryanair gave customers the option to refund the supposedly canceled flight or change the departure and arrival airport for free.

The airline said the flight was canceled for “commercial reasons”, initially saying this would affect some February trips.

Customers were then informed on Friday that they had been wrongly notified of cancellations and that the process of reinstating flights would begin.

The error email read: “Your flight has been canceled for commercial reasons. If you are traveling with others, you must inform them of this cancellation.

“We sincerely apologize for any inconvenience caused.

“As described below, you can take advantage of an alternative route to your destination and reasonable care, or a full refund of the cost of your ticket. You can transfer to alternative flights online for free.”

However, on Friday Ryanair published a new email urging passengers to “ignore” the previous message and that their flight would still operate.

It read: “Please note that an email has been sent to you regarding the incorrectly canceled flight. Please ignore this email as your flight will operate as scheduled.

“We apologize for the recent error and any inconvenience this may have caused. Below you will find your flight details.”

But passengers who rushed to rebook flights with alternative airlines after receiving the initial error message are now complaining that it has left them without money.

One wrote on X: “I got an email saying Ryanair had canceled the flight. Immediately booked a new flight with Aer Lingus.

“We have now been told that the flight was not actually canceled and that we cannot request a refund because the flight has been reinstated. So now €300 out of my own pocket.”

Ryanair has been contacted for further comment.
