Troy University announces new Ph.D. master’s programs

Troy University is expanding its degree offerings with the addition of a new Ph.D. program, a new Ph.D. concentration and a new master’s program, the university announced Thursday.

The three new degree options include a Ph.D. in Criminology, a Master of Business Administration – Data Analytics and a concentration in Global Healthcare Leadership in the Global Leadership Ph.D. program.

“Troy University’s introduction of degree programs in healthcare leadership, data analytics and criminology directly addresses our state’s evolving workforce needs,” said Dr. Kerry Palmer, Senior Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs. “These strategic additions to our academic portfolio reflect our commitment to preparing graduates for in-demand careers that serve Alabama communities. By equipping our students with specialized skills in healthcare management, data-driven decision making and criminal justice, we are investing in both their future success and the well-being of all Alabamians.”

The programs will launch in 2025 and are intended to provide students with more variety in program options, said Mary Anne Templeton, dean of the Graduate School and Associate Provost.

“We are expanding our master’s and doctoral programs to provide more students with more opportunities to broaden their knowledge,” she said. “By doing this, we aim to strengthen the workforce with highly qualified professionals who can meet the needs of companies in high-demand sectors while advancing research in those areas.”

The MBA in Data Analytics is a 30-hour curriculum that equips graduates with technical and strategic leadership skills needed in today’s data-driven economy, according to Sorrell College of Business Dean Dr. Judson Edwards.

“We are excited to launch the new STEM-designated MBA in Analytics,” he said. “The new Analytics MBA enables students to develop, analyze and translate data into meaningful applied business solutions. We have highly qualified faculty who prepare them for professional success through engaging instruction in data application and innovation management.”

The Ph.D. in Criminology is a 60-hour curriculum designed for students who want to work in government agencies, nonprofit organizations, community institutions, or higher education. The program aims to teach candidates about the root causes of crime, how to critically evaluate theoretical perspectives, and how to apply practical approaches to crime.

“Our program is designed to help students achieve their professional goals such as teaching at higher education institutions and advancing their careers,” said Dr. Halil Akbas, Associate Professor and Graduate Director. “The faculty members will help students develop strong research and statistical skills, as well as theoretical knowledge. With the depth of knowledge they gain, they will be equipped to tackle complex issues in crime and justice and conduct research in the field of criminology that contributes to positive change in the field.”

The Ph.D. in global leadership is a 63-hour curriculum, with 45 hours devoted to core, research, and dissertation classes. After completing the core courses, students will take specialized leadership classes in global health. Healthcare specialization courses include healthcare policy and politics, principles of epidemiology, innovation in global leadership, and a global leadership seminar.

“The need for leaders in global health has never been more critical,” said Dr. Pamela Lemoine, program liaison and professor of leadership. “With a Ph.D. in Global Leadership and a specialization in Global Healthcare Leadership, graduates will have the advanced, in-depth knowledge and skills needed to identify and respond to situations that challenge the infrastructure of the healthcare industry, as well as the communities in which we live and work. ”

The Global Healthcare Leadership and Criminology PhDs are offered through TROYOnline while the Analytics MBA is offered in the flex format – online and at the Troy Campus. Students interested in pursuing these programs are encouraged to begin applying now.
