Dozens of dead stingrays wash up on Atlantic Beach

ATLANTIC BEACH, NC (WRAL) – More than 200 dead stingrays were found on Atlantic Beach on Thursday.

According to the North Carolina Department of Environmental Quality, the fishery received a stop net fishing report Thursday morning that fishing would occur on the beach.

NCDEQ said the notifications are required.

When the Marine Fisheries Department and a Marine Patrol officer arrived to observe the operation, they discovered that more than 200 dead stingrays caught during the fishery had washed ashore.

NCDEQ said the fisherman was releasing the stingrays, but some still washed up as they tried to get them out of the surf and back into the water.
