14-year-old charged in stabbing death of student at Yonkers high school

Gorton High School in Yonkers was temporarily placed on lockdown Thursday morning after a fight broke out between two classmates.

“A student brought a knife to the school and engaged in a targeted attack with another student,” said Dr. Frank Hernandez, Superintendent of the Yonkers Public Schools.

The unnamed 17-year-old student who was attacked is in stable condition at a hospital and a 14-year-old suspect is in custody.

Police say the teen is charged with assault, attempted assault and criminal possession of a weapon.

After the argument, the school was temporarily closed.

The school does have metal detectors that are used every day, but only on some of the random children.

Parents and students say this is not enough.

Ayleen Quino, a ninth-grader, was in class when the attack occurred.

“It was kind of scary because you never know who’s going to get a knife because they do have metal detectors, but they don’t use them all the time,” Quino said.

After the lockdown was lifted, school education resumed for the rest of the day.

“Just do the right thing,” implored mother Teresa Johnson, as she waited for her child to be released, “…and the right thing is not violence.”
