Mom says man was sexting 13-year-old daughter, encounter at Popeyes led to officer-involved shooting

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. (WJW) – A Florida mother’s decision to confront a predator she says was sexting her 13-year-old daughter led to him being shot by police Monday morning.

Alan Parker, Chief of the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office held one press conference Monday about the officer-involved shooting.

According to JSO Sheriff TK Waters and Chief of Investigations Alan Parkerthe mother of a 13-year-old girl became aware of an inappropriate texting relationship between her daughter and an 18-year-old man.

That’s when the mother started texting the suspect and eventually made an appointment at a Popeyes restaurant at 7 a.m. Monday.

The mother was accompanied by her children, a 13-year-old daughter and 11-year-old son, when she confronted the suspect, who was armed.

The suspect, later identified as 18-year-old Cerry Banks, then waved the gun and said, “If you hear the shots tonight, you’ll know what’s going on,” police said. sheriff’s office.

During the press conferenceOfficers said the mother then grabbed her children and entered the restaurant as the suspect walked behind the business. The mother called the sheriff’s office from Popeyes and reported the situation.

When officers arrived on scene, they found the suspect behind the building. One officer demanded that the suspect turn around and show his hands, but he did not comply.

The suspect then fled the scene.

When the officer who was following him reached the corner of the business, he found the suspect with a gun pulled from his waistband.

After ignoring multiple commands to stop and drop the weapon, the officer shot the suspect multiple times, police said sheriff’s office.

The suspect fled further from the area, but dropped the weapon at a neighboring business.

Ultimately, officers were able to establish a perimeter in the area and apprehend the suspect. He was subsequently taken to a local hospital in ‘stable condition’ after being hit by bullets ‘several times’ information released during the press conference.
