To the 2,048 students, 140 teachers and 10 administrators from the six area schools who received “exemplary” annual report cards from the Illinois State Board of Education. Editor Jeff D’Alessio will continue to dig through the mountains of data in the coming weeks, but first, a look at what made one of the super six of 2024: MAHOMET-SEYMOUR HIGH SCHOOL – extra special.

One of the reasons Mahomet-Seymour earned the highest possible distinction for the second year in a row: It received the maximum points available in the ISBE formula for graduation rate (92.1 percent) and proficiency in English/language arts (49 .6 percent compared to the state average of 39.4), math (55.7/27.9) and science (69.4/52.7). (As long as).


1. Immediately after the pandemic, Mahomet-Seymour’s on-track freshman rating dropped from 94.2 percent to 88.1 percent, triggering an action plan. “In response, we have become more deliberate in monitoring this indicator,” says director Chad Benedict.

“We saw this initiative as a way to be proactive versus reactive with our student support. First-year student teams were established with staff to monitor progress and provide support.”

The outcome: that number rose to 90.2 in 2022, 92.1 in 2023 and 94.3 in this round.

2. For the sixth consecutive report, Mahomet-Seymour returned more than 90 percent of its teachers last year. Help the cause: The average teacher salary in the district reached $60,000 for the first time.

3. A top 22.7 percent of the region’s Mahomet-Seymour juniors exceeded the proficiency level on the math portion of the SAT.

Next highest among the 39 nearby high schools: Paxton-Buckley-Loda at 8.4, Champaign Central at 7.4 and LeRoy at 6.6. Eighteen schools in the region had no students in the “outperforming” category, while the state average was just 6.2.
