Jury trial for Wichita man accused of abandoning child in canal

WICHITA, Kan. (KWCH) – A Wichita man accused of abandoning a baby in the canal will stand trial in December.

Vincent Perez was subsequently charged with aggravated battery and aggravated child endangerment his 11-month-old daughter was found in a Wichita canal last summer.

According to an affidavit of probable cause, Perez tried to suffocate the child while at a friend’s home. He then left the baby in a stroller, eventually abandoning her in Linwood Park.

A passerby driving along the canal route in July noticed the baby and called 911. Police found the baby burned and naked, with a scratch on her forehead. She was also covered in mud. The child was taken to the hospital, where doctors discovered bruises all over her body.

Perez’s jury trial is scheduled for December 16, 2024 in Sedgwick County.
