Man faces multiple charges after traffic stop leads to police chase

A Stavely, Alta., man is facing multiple charges after a call about a suspicious vehicle led to the seizure of stolen property.

On November 6, around 10:45 p.m., High River RCMP responded to reports of a suspicious vehicle that appeared to be lurking and checking other vehicles.

Officers identified the car and attempted to initiate a traffic stop, but the driver fled. Police found the vehicle abandoned further away.

While searching for the suspect, police received reports of a freshly stolen vehicle in the area.

With some assistance from the Calgary Police Service, who provided air support through HAWCS, the stolen vehicle was identified and a tire deflation device was used to immobilize it.

The suspect was arrested without incident.

A 25-year-old Stavely man has been charged with two counts of failing to stop for a peace officer while pursued, theft of a motor vehicle, two counts of possession of property obtained by crime, two counts of dangerous operation of a motor vehicle, trespassing’ at night, seven cases of non-compliance with the conditions of release and a number of violations of the Road Safety Act.

The suspect was taken into custody. He is scheduled to appear in court on Nov. 22 in Okotoks.

High River RCMP say there has been an increase in stolen vehicles and thefts from vehicles. They say the majority of cases involve unlocked vehicles with valuables inside.

Police recommend never leaving keys in a car, or leaving it hot with the keys in the ignition.

Remove all valuables, do not leave garage door openers in vehicles, and at the end of the day, double-check that your vehicles are locked and garage doors are closed.

Stavely is located 117 kilometers south of Calgary.
