Red Flag Warning issued for Saturday as bushfire risk escalates in LI

Fire departments on Long Island are bracing for a potentially dangerous day on Saturday as dry conditions and high winds bring an increased risk of wildfires.

A Red Flag Warning has been issued for Saturday, indicating that these hazardous conditions could cause rapid fire growth, making the situation extremely dangerous for both firefighters and local residents.

The warning comes as Long Island struggles with drought.

Suffolk County has reported 168 wildfires since Oct. 25, and Nassau County has seen 53.

Fire officials are urging increased caution because even the smallest spark can start a major fire.

“It’s a very dangerous thing we’re dealing with, and the potential for rapid fire development is really high right now,” said Assistant Chief Joseph Vereline of the Islip Central Fire Department. “A simple ash from one of your fire pits can very easily cause a fire. If you throw a cigarette into the dry brush out of the window, a fire can very easily start. And with the circumstances we have now, this could start very quickly.”

Local authorities are particularly concerned about the dry conditions, which are among the worst in years.

George Gorman of New York State Parks added that several wildfires have already occurred in state parks in recent weeks.

To combat the growing threat, fire patrols have been established at five parks in Suffolk County.

These patrols actively monitor for signs of smoke or flames and even use their sense of smell to detect potential fires.

“They look for flames and smoke, but they also smell for smoke. If they notice anything suspicious, they immediately notify the local fire department,” Gorman said.

These fire watch patrols will remain in effect throughout the weekend and until the fire risk subsides. Authorities strongly advise the public to avoid activities that could cause fires, especially on Saturdays.
