Indian students are being deterred from applying to British universities, the report has found

It warns that universities with financial models that rely heavily on students from countries such as India, Nigeria and Bangladesh are likely to be significantly affected by this downward trend.

“The number of international students from certain countries sending significant numbers of students to Britain has fallen significantly,” OfS warns.

“Based on current trends and without taking into account significant mitigation measures, we estimate a net sector income decline of GBP 3,445 million by 2025-2026, and, without significant mitigation measures, a sector-level deficit of minus GBP 1,636 million . , with up to 72 percent of providers experiencing shortages and 40 percent experiencing low liquidity,” it adds.

The Indian National Students’ Association (INSA) UK said it was not surprised by the significant drop in the number of students from India, given the government’s strict measures against foreign students being allowed to bring their dependent partners and spouses.

“Students will not be allowed to bring their partners to Britain under the new policy. Given the economic conditions here and the recent stories of riots, the prospects for British universities are bleak unless the government addresses this issue, as they rely heavily on Indian students,” the spokesperson said. INSA British President Amit Tiwari.
