Murder suspect with dead ankle bracelet is said to have committed the second murder while on bail

MOBILE, Ala. (WALA/Gray News) – An Alabama man released on bail for murder is suspected of having committed another murder.

Investigators in Mobile say Nyyon Sanders Joseph Evans Jr. shot Dauphin Gate Apartments on Monday evening.

Nyyon Sanders allegedly drained the battery in his ankle monitor before committing the second crime.

Now the private electronic ankle monitoring company is under fire again.

Circuit Court President Judge Wesley Pipes identified the company as Accupoint and said there have been problems in the past.

District Attorney Keith Blackwood says he has deep concerns about how this crime happened.

“It’s just an absolute worst-case scenario that everyone in the community is afraid of,” Blackwood said.

Nyyon Sanders was arrested Wednesday morning following a search warrant in the area of Bankhead Street and Euclid Avenue.

The victim’s family say they are furious after finding out he was already out on bond for murder.

“How many times does it take for someone to kill someone? How many chances will he get, just like the second time?” said Joseph Evans Sr. “It will be the third time someone’s family has had to go through what me and the first family went through, so I hope justice is served.”

According to Blackwood, Nyyon Sanders should not have been in that area in the first place.

“It is my understanding that Nyyon Sanders lost his ankle monitor after 5 p.m. and committed the murder within four hours,” Blackwood said.

Last month, Accupoint came under fire after a murder suspect violated the conditions of his release by going to a casino in Mississippi.

Blowjob says it is “certainly an option.” to cut ties with Accupoint in the near future.

Pipes also said he contacted the company Wednesday afternoon. His office is working through multiple agencies to figure out what happened and is exploring different options for the best way to electronically monitor suspects while out on bail.

According to mobile police, Nyyon Sanders had a bond of one Murder from 2022 he allegedly committed it together with his brother Kevin Sanders.

Court documents state bond has been revoked for both brothers. The documents also show that the brothers were together during both alleged crimes.

Kevin Sanders is not charged in the November murder, according to court documents, but he did violate his bond by allegedly driving with Nyyon Sanders to an area outside his authorized travel area.

Blackwood called it a failure of the private ankle monitoring system.

He says the company was not notified that Nyyon Sanders’ battery was dead until 8 a.m. the next morning.

“Yet another case where you have a private ankle monitoring company that is tasked with monitoring someone who is out on bail,” Blackwood said. “That did not happen in this case and this suspect would have committed murder again.”

The DA says he’s ready for the sheriff to take over, but it all comes down to money.

“It all comes down to funding for our law enforcement agency to be able to take on this task,” Blackwood said. “You need staff for that. You have to have the equipment. The sheriff’s office is once again ready, willing and able to take this on.”

Accupoint did not respond to requests for comment.

The trial for the 2022 murder will begin on January 13, 2025.
