A man reportedly tried to commit suicide after killing his two minor sons at the family’s residence in Pallabi in Dhaka this morning (Nov 16), police said.

Police were notified shortly after the incident and rushed to the scene and found the children’s bodies. They then took the man, identified as Md Ahad, 40, to Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH) in critical condition.

Confirming the development, officials from the Mirpur Division of the Dhaka Metropolitan Police told The Business Standard that one of the boys was seven years old while the other was just three years old. Their identities had yet to be confirmed.

Police also said the murders and reported suicide attempt could have occurred following a family dispute and due to financial problems.

Citing Pallabi police, media reports say Ahad slit the throats of both children before attempting to commit suicide in the same manner at their rented house in Baigartek area around 10.30am today.

Ahad, who is currently undergoing treatment at DMCH for serious injuries to his throat, was working as a security guard while his wife worked as a domestic worker. The woman was at work at the time of the incident, police said.

According to media reports, police said they recovered a bloodied knife while the forensic team was collecting other evidence from the crime scene.
