Winnipeg police release images of person wanted in October machete attack

Winnipeg police have released photos taken via video surveillance to help identify a person involved in a machete attack last month.

Police previously said the victim, a 56-year-old man, was walking eastbound on Ellice Avenue near Beverley Street around 4:15 a.m. on Oct. 25 when a man he did not know approached him from behind.

Police were called to the Health Sciences Center in downtown Winnipeg at 5:05 a.m. for a report of an injured man who showed up at hospital with life-altering injuries from an assault with a weapon.

The attack was unprovoked, police said earlier.

Police described the suspect as about five feet tall, with a thin build and long dark hair. The person was last seen wearing black and white Nike Air Jordan shoes, dark pants and a dark hoodie with “02” on the back, police said in an updated release Saturday.

The age of the attacker is unknown, police said.

The Major Crimes Unit continues to investigate and is asking for the public’s help in identifying the person accused of the attack.

Anyone with information is asked to contact Winnipeg Police at 204-986-6219, or Crime Stoppers at 204-786-8477 (TIPS) or online at winnipegcrimestoppers.org.
