Rs 10-Crore lawsuit over 3-second clip? What's behind Nayanthara-Dhanush Spat

Nayanthara has criticized Dhanush for his legal notice against her Netflix documentary.

An all-out war has broken out between South cinema superstars Nayanthara and Dhanush over a three-second clip in a Netflix documentary. While Dhanush demanded damages of Rs 10 crore for allegedly using footage from a film produced by him, Nayanthara responded with a scathing three-page open letter saying she was ‘shocked’ that he was demanding such a huge amount for the ‘just three seconds’. ” of clips allegedly recorded on “personal devices.”

Rs 10 Crore Legal Notice

Dhanush sent the legal notice of Rs 10 crore to the producers of the project after the trailer of the ‘Jawan’ actor’s upcoming documentary – Nayanthara: Beyond the fairy tale – appeared online last week. The documentary reportedly features footage from the 2015 Tamil film ‘Naanum Rowdy Dhaan’. Nayanthara starred opposite Vijay Sethupathi in the film produced by Dhanush’s Wunderbar Films. The romantic comedy is written and directed by Nayanthara’s husband and filmmaker Vignesh Shivan.

Nayantharain the letter posted on her Instagram account, claimed that the team behind the documentary was waiting for Dhanush’s approval for the release but “eventually decided to give up and settle for the current version” after he “refused” to “use ‘Naanum’ to allow Rowdy Dhaan’ songs or visual cuts despite multiple requests”.

“A Low Ever”

She also said that many “industry well-wishers” contributed to the Netflix documentary “about me, my life, my love and marriage.”

“Unfortunately, the film does not have the most special and important film, ‘Naanum Rowdy Dhaan’,” Nayanthara said.

Dhanush has not yet responded to her letter.

The 39-year-old actor did not mince his words in criticizing Dhanush for the “all-time low” and claimed that she would give a “befitting” response to the announcement through legal means.

“We were shocked to read those lines where you questioned the use of some videos (only three seconds) recorded on our personal devices, and also BTS images that are already very publicly present on social media, and a claimed amount of Rs 10 crore as compensation for just three seconds,” she said.

“This is an absolute low point for you and speaks volumes about your character. I wish you were half the person you portray on stage at audio launches for your innocent fans, but it’s clear you don’t practice what you are preaching, at least not with me and my partner,” the actor added.

Nayanthara alleged that Dhanush said “terrible things” about the film released almost a decade ago and that he continues to “behave despicably while wearing a mask in front of the world”.

“I learned through film circles that your ego got hurt immensely after the film became a blockbuster. Your displeasure over its success was observable even to the common man through award shows related to this film (Filmfare 2016)”, she said.

Urging Dhanush to watch the documentary, Nayanthara said, “It’s important to #SpreadLove, and I hope and pray that one day you too are fully able to do it and not just say it.”

Filmmaker Shivan has also stepped in to support his wife through sharing

an old video of Dhanush on Instagram, where the actor spoke about positivity and the importance of living without hate.

The music video, taken from the audio launch of the 2017 film Sakka Podu Podu Raja, shows Dhanush saying in Tamil, “The love we have for one should not turn into hatred for the other. If it changes, it has That emotion no longer has meaning.” The world is moving towards a pathetic state. There is so much negativity. No one likes it when someone else does well in life. No one should hate another not like anyone, just move on.”

The documentary will be released on November 18.
