Pilot avoids serious injuries in ultralight plane crash – Duluth News Tribune

NEAR EVELETH – The pilot of a microlight aircraft that crashed in a wooded, swampy area Friday afternoon was not seriously injured.

Steve Shykes, chief of the Fayal Fire Department, told the News Tribune that the department received a report about the incident Friday around 5:45 p.m. A Fayal Township man took off from Eveleth-Virginia Airport on a plane before it crashed in an area near Ely Lake Airport.

Rescue teams from multiple agencies arrived on the scene. Shykes said it took about an hour to rescue the man and about four hours to remove the small plane. The pilot was the only person on the plane.

Shykes said the pilot stated that the engine stopped. The pilot was cold, but not seriously injured. He was transported by ambulance to Essentia Health-Virginia for evaluation.

Our newsroom occasionally reports stories under the byline “staff.” Often the byline “staff” is used when rewriting basic news briefs that come from official sources, such as a city press release about a road closure, and require little or no reporting. Sometimes this byline is used when a news story contains multiple authors or when the story is formed by merging previously reported news from different sources. If outside sources are used, this will be noted in the story.
