Freeman joins the three and hits his first of the match from the top of the key.

Starling pays Freeman back next time and finds him nearby. Freeman spins off the smaller defender and finishes with the easy finger roll.

Halftime: Syracuse 31, Youngstown 38

After an ice-cold shooting performance from beyond the arc in the first half, Syracuse leads Youngstown State by seven.

When Gabe Dynes, a 7-foot Youngstown center, fouled out early with two quick fouls, SU had a golden opportunity to attack the basket. While there were times when Eddie Lampkin and others abused the paint, too often the Dutch settled for three-point shots that didn’t fall.

Defensively, the Dutch also had difficulty controlling the drive. EJ Farmer, who went 1-19 from the field in this game, has 13 points at the half. The Penguins are generally shooting 50 percent from the field, with most of the half played without one of their best players in Dynes.

JJ Starling leads the Dutch team with seven points, while Lampkin and Chris Bell each have six points.

Currently shooting 7% from deep, SU will have to find a way to get going from behind the arc as the game heads into its action-packed final 20 minutes.

First half

Taylor throws a pair down the line.

A collapse from half court by Starling is lifted after the referee said he had stepped into the backcourt.

1:07 remaining: Syracuse 29, Youngstown 36

Lampkin with the drop-off pass behind the back to Petar Majstorovic for the finish.

The offensive struggle for the Dutch team continues, multiple looks at the basket and offensive rebounds continue to fail to lead to a goal.

3:51 remaining: Syracuse 27, Youngstown 32

Syracuse enforces a five-second violation on impact.

Starling with a reversal jumper. He has six points in the game so far.

7:09 remaining: Syracuse 22, Youngstown 23

JJ Starling with an aggressive look at the basket for two.

Lampkin knocks down the 50-foot jumper off a Jyare Davis feed. The two have developed a nice synergy when they play together on the front pitch.

Lampkin shows off his hitting skills, raising the needle with a bouncing bass to a slashing Lucas Taylor, who knocks him down.

Lampkin rebounds his own miss and uses it again for the and-one. The Colorado transfer has made his presence felt without Dynes patrolling the paint on the other end.

11:34 remaining: Syracuse 12, Youngstown 17

Donnie Freeman takes over for Eddie Lampkin and comes up for the mid-range jumper.

Early second foul on 7-foot-3 Gabe Dynes for the Penguins. Look for the Orange to attack the paint now that it’s clear of a major shot blocker.

Freeman was the first to take advantage of the open space on the inside, cutting low for the easy shot.

Bell was next to the basket and drove to the rim for an and-one finish.

3:31 remaining: Syracuse 5, Youngstown 8

Chris Bell gets the scoring going for the Dutch with a three after the Penguins scored the first four points.

Youngstown’s EJ Farmer has six of the team’s eight points to start. Already over his season average of 5.5 points per game.

Foreplay

After the emotional high of Kiyan Anthony dayyes, there is a basketball game to be played.

Syracuse (2-0) wraps up their homestand to open the season against Youngstown State (1-1).

It will be the first ever match between the two teams. The last time Youngstown played an ACC school was an 88-81 loss at Notre Dame on Nov. 13, 2022. Overall, the Penguins’ record against ACC teams is 0-8, which should bode well predict for a Dutch team that is still looking for a quality win from start to finish this season.

Syracuse is coming off another close game against Colgate, where they escaped with a 74-72 victory despite missing three straight free throws to ice the game. The Dutch had a double-digit lead early in the second half, but Colgate stormed back and kept the lead close down the stretch. A last second defensive stop kept SU undefeated on the young season.

Eddie Lampkin filled the stat sheet with a 15-point, 12-rebound double-double and five assists. Chris Bell wasn’t far behind with 14 points, including a personal 7-0 run in the second half.

For Youngstown, their last game was an 81-47 loss to No. 21 Ohio State on the road. Fifth-year guard Nico Galette leads the team with 12 points and nearly six rebounds per night. The Penguins will also have the undisputed size advantage today. Gabe Dynes, a 7-foot-1 sophomore, mans the middle and averages five blocks per night.

One thing to keep an eye on: conversion at the free throw line

In two games, the Dutch team has missed fifteen free throws, including several crucial free throws. Those misses kept SU’s opponents closer than they perhaps should have been late in the games. If Syracuse can get to the line and convert at a high rate, it should be a confidence boost heading into their first road game of the season against Texas.
