Wife dead, husband in custody after police called to Oshawa home – CP24

Durham Police say a female victim was taken to hospital with serious injuries and was later pronounced dead.

Durham Regional Police say they are investigating a murder case after a woman was found with “significant injuries” at an Oshawa home overnight.

Police were called to a home on Eulalie Avenue, near King Street East and Ritson Road South, around 12:30 a.m. Sunday.

“Officers arrived on scene and located a 48-year-old female exhibiting obvious signs of trauma,” said Acting Staff Sgt. Joanne Bortoluss told reporters outside the house Sunday morning.

First responders administered CPR and the woman was then rushed to a Toronto-area trauma centre, police said. However, she was pronounced dead a short time later.

“Her husband, a 41-year-old man, is in police custody and charged with first-degree murder,” Bortoluss said.

Oshawa Murder Durham police say they are investigating a homicide after a woman was found with injuries at a home on Eulalie Avenue in Oshawa on Sunday, November 17, 2024.

She added that the couple’s two children – both aged five – and an elderly woman were home at the time of the incident. However, none of them were injured.

Yellow caution tape could be seen around the house on Sunday, while a police car sat outside.

A man who spoke to CP24 said he woke up to the flashing lights of what “seemed like a million police cars” and his family looked outside to see what was happening.

“They saw them take a woman outside and try to resuscitate her, and they saw our neighbor get pulled out and arrested, and yes, the children were taken out of the house,” Ron Mohr said. “It’s a shame because we’ve been here for 18 years and I’ve never seen anything like this.”

Another woman told CP24 she was shocked when she woke up to find the news in her neighborhood, which she described as generally friendly.

“They’re very, very nice, all those neighbors, but I don’t remember him,” June Frances Broomer said of her neighbor who was arrested. She called the situation “terrifying.”

Bortoluss said investigators are calling on anyone with information about the killing to speak to police.

She also said services are available for anyone who needs help with domestic violence.

“When it comes to intimate partner violence, there are no geographic locations. It really does have an impact everywhere and everywhere, and so we really want to emphasize that there are resources available,” she said. “And if you need us, if you need victim assistance, we are all here to help.”

Police are asking anyone with information to contact investigators.
