Couple dead in murder-suicide in Mahaica

Thagewante Motie, a 28-year-old resident of Supply Squatting Area, Mahaica on the East Coast of Demerara (ECD), succumbed to lacerations inflicted by her partner who has since died by suicide.

According to police, the woman was seriously injured with chops to her neck and arm. The incident took place at her home in Supply, Mahaica on Thursday, November 14 at around 9pm. She was admitted as a patient at the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation and died on Saturday around 4pm while being treated in the recovery room of the city hospital.

The suspect, identified as 26-year-old Uram Doorbassa called ‘Anil’, a laborer from Belmonte, Mahaica, died by suicide the next day while in hospital.

Police investigation shows that Motie had an argument with the suspect in her garden on Thursday around 9 p.m. The suspect eventually used a sword and slashed the victim twice, once in the neck and once in her arm.

After injuring the woman, the suspect consumed a poisonous substance. Both Motie and the suspect were then rushed to the GPHC, where they later succumbed.
