Attempted traffic stop leads to chase, with officer shooting early Sunday

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (KCTV) – The Missouri State Highway Patrol is investigating a shooting involving its troops early Sunday morning.

On November 17, 2024 at 12:28 a.m., an MSHP trooper attempted to pull over a car for speeding on northbound I-35 in Clay County. The driver refused to stop and sped away, exiting the highway and heading back onto I-35 south into Jackson County.

A Kansas Highway Patrol helicopter listened to the status of the pursuit via regional communications and began monitoring the car from above. The MSHP troopers on the ground stopped monitoring and instead took updates from the helicopter.

Ultimately, the KHP helicopter had to return to Kansas for another call. MSHP resumed the pursuit and headed to the last known location of the suspect vehicle. They moved it to Linwood Boulevard and Van Brunt Avenue at 12:40 p.m.

Responding troopers tried to prevent the car from driving away again by placing one patrol car in the front and another in the back.

As the troopers got out of their car, the driver backed up and struck the car in the rear, before pulling out in front of a trooper who was standing in the road. The officer shot at the car, but it continued to drive and returned to westbound I-70 before exiting at Prospect Avenue.

The car was disabled and stopped at Prospect Avenue and 13th Street. The driver got out and ran, but was arrested.

There were two passengers in the car, one of whom had gunshot wounds. The injured passenger was treated until ambulance arrived and then taken to an area hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

No soldiers were injured.

MSHP’s Drug and Crime Division is leading the investigation, with assistance from the Kansas City Police Department.
