Road rage: man crushed under pace, dragged away

Surat: While the death of MICA student Priyanshu Jain in a road accident in Ahmedabad has not faded from the collective memory, a similar gruesome incident has shocked the Diamond City. A 56-year-old man was deliberately crushed under a tempo on Saturday after an altercation over rash driving.
The victim was identified as Jitendra Katargam who worked in a PSU bank. The incident took place in Katargam area of Surat in the presence of the victim’s son.
On November 10, Jain was stabbed to death by police officer Virendrasinh Padheriya after the MICA student shouted at the officer for his rash driving in Ahmedabad’s Bopal area.
In the Surat incident, Kanthariya went to the FSL office in Surat on Saturday to receive his son Bhavik. While returning home to Amroli around 3.15 pm, they stopped at Ratnamala Crossroads due to traffic congestion. At that moment, a white pickup tempo (Bolero) hit their motorcycle from behind.
Both Kanthariya and Bhavik confronted the pacer about his rash driving, which led to a heated argument between them. The driver allegedly responded with verbal abuse before accelerating. The temperature hit Kanthariya and dragged him for some distance.
The pace stopped only after Bhavik and passersby tried to stop it. But by then Kanthariya had been seriously injured. The pace driver sped away. Kanhariya was rushed to Prananath Hospital where he was declared brought dead by doctors.
The entire incident was captured by CCTV footage. Teams from Surat crime branch and Katargam police station swung into action and arrested the tempo driver, Mayur Mer (39), near Khodiyar temple of Mahidharpura. The pace picked up.
Mer was booked for murder and criminal intimidation under the provisions of Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS). Relevant sections of the Prevention of Atrocities Act were also invoked as Kanhariya belonged to the SC community.
Kanhariya worked as a peon in the Bank of Baroda. His son works at the Surat FSL office.
