Previously, Gladiator II director Ridley Scott praised Denzel for playing the role of Macrinus in the film.

Speak with The New York TimesRidley noted, “Macrinus has a hint of bisexuality. There is a twinkle. Plus he’s a gangster. I think he was clearly a prisoner of war, went to the ring, earned his freedom, suddenly found himself working in a giant bread factory, supplying bread to the Roman army.

“Maybe he eventually adopted that and then moved into ammunition, so he’s an arms dealer. I thought that was his evolution. He said, ‘Oh, I like that. I’m a gangster,” the director said.
