Gujarat: 18-year-old MBBS student dies after hours of brutal violence

An 18-year-old first-year MBBS student of a medical college in Gujarat’s Patan district died tragically after he was allegedly made to stand for three hours as part of agitation by seniors, officials said on Sunday.

The incident, which took place on Saturday, resulted in the student collapsing after standing for long periods of time. The council has started an investigation into the matter.

Anil Methaniya, an MBBS student at GMERS Medical College and Hospital in Dharpur, Patan, reportedly collapsed and died after being forced to stand for three hours while being dressed by seniors at the hostel on Saturday evening, according to college dean Dr. Hardik Shah.

“The student was rushed to hospital after he collapsed, and attempts to revive him failed and he was declared dead. His classmates said Methaniya died after having to stand for three hours and introduce himself to the seniors of the college hostel,” Shah said. .

The college’s anti-ragging committee has initiated an investigation and action will be taken against the seniors if found guilty. According to Balisana police, the student’s body has been sent for a post-mortem and a case of accidental death has been registered.

A freshman revealed that seven to eight senior students made a group of juniors stand around for about three hours, introducing themselves one by one.

“They forced us to stand and asked us not to get irritated. Finally, a student, who was also standing with us, fell unconscious. We rushed him to a hospital where he died,” he said on condition of anonymity .

Methaniya’s cousin, Dharmendra Methaniya, told reporters that the family hopes for justice from both the college and the government.

He said: “I received a call from my uncle that my cousin had been admitted to hospital after he fell unconscious. When I arrived, I found that he had passed away.”

“We are waiting for the post-mortem report to find out the exact cause of death. We have come to know that some third year students left him standing for two to three hours as part of the ragging, which made him feel dizzy and fell.” he said.
