A new deli bar has opened on the Wirral with a familiar face at the helm. Found on Victoria Road in New Brighton‘s Victoria Quarter, District House is the brainchild of music legend Jayne Casey and her partner Eric Gooden.

Jayne, Artistic Director, is best known for her involvement in Liverpool’s punk and new wave scene in the 1970s and 1980s, with Big in Japan, Pink Military and Pink Industry. Since then she has tried her luck in the catering industry. After having success in setting up the Baltic triangleJayne has now returned to New Brighton, a place where she says it all started for her.

Jayne said: ‘My mother died when I was five and my father was an alcoholic, so as a child I bounced around children’s homes and ran away at every opportunity. As a teenager I fled to New Brighton and worked to get my own flat there.

“Until my old headmistress finally found me and encouraged me to study for my exams. I ended up working in Liverpool, got involved in the music scene and the rest is history.”

Her latest venture prides itself on being a creative hub where you can find coffee, food, drinks, art and music. The bright, spacious and informal meeting place has left-wing pop art for sale on the walls, and the menu includes artisan charcuterie boards, seafood platters, homemade soup and scouse.

At weekends, resident DJs grace the backroom and spin vinyl sets, and the venue has already had some unforgettable nights. In the near future the venue will host a range of events including vintage markets, exhibitions and book launches.

Jayne said: “Looking back, it’s been quite a journey. Eric and I still have District in The Baltic Triangle, an inclusive space for various music and club nights, but it feels very special to open a venue in New Brighton – where it all started for me.

“New Brighton was such a great place to escape to as a teenager and it represented an escape from my difficult childhood. I now want to give something back to the city that gave me some fifty years ago.

“It’s great to be part of this movement here in New Brighton. It reminds me of the Baltic Triangle movement, when we took back the buildings of the big banks and companies and turned them into an independent creative district.

“I admire what (Rockpoint Leisure CEO) Dan Davies has done here at The Victoria Quarter – it’s a triumph for creativity and we’re delighted to be involved.”
