A Florida doctor accused of stealing donations from Helene is due back in court in February

BUNCOMBE COUNTY, N.C. (WLOS) — Mark Anthony Smith, a licensed physician in Jacksonville, Florida, is scheduled to appear in a Buncombe County courtroom on February 12.

This appearance follows his second court hearing this morning.

The Buncombe County Sheriff’s Office charged Smith with multiple crimes, including stealing donations intended for Helene victims.

Its costs include:

  • Breaking and entering
  • Theft after burglary
  • Obtain property under false pretenses
  • Violation during emergency
  • Failed to return a rented MV <>>$4,000 (Failure to return a rented motor vehicle with a value of more than $4,000)
  • Damage to personal property

Smith was being held on a $60,000 bond at the Buncombe County Detention Center. He posted his bond on Tuesday, November 5.

Smith also spoke with First coastal newsan ABC affiliate in Jacksonville, denied his accusationsand called them ‘absurd’.
