Driver charged in crash that killed seven-year-old girl

KUALA LUMPUR: The driver involved in an accident that killed a seven-year-old girl has been charged in the Magistrate’s Court here.

P. Kuhan Raj, 31, demanded a trial after the charges were read to him by Magistrate Haneefa Ariffin on Monday (Nov 19).

He was accused of driving his car at high speed and causing the death of Nur Naura Nathifa Mohd El-Khuwailid, the pillion passenger on a motorcycle on the Bukit Jalil Highway towards Puchong on November 15 at 9.50pm.

The charge under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987 carries a maximum fine of RM50,000 and a prison term of five to 10 years upon conviction.

Deputy Public Prosecutor Salsabila Mohammad proposed bail of RM10,000 in one surety. However, lawyer Inderpal Singh asked for a lower bail amount as his client is self-employed and supports his family.

Haneefa set the bail at RM12,000 and ordered the immediate suspension of Kuhan’s driver’s license.

The court fixed January 21 next year for mention.
