Councilor's bid to assassinate: police find scooter

Kolkata: The scooter ridden by the assailants involved in the failed assassination attempt of councilor Sushanta Ghosh last Friday was eventually traced around 1.4 km from the crime scene. Police said a four-day search led them to an alley near Bondel Gate on Tuesday. Police said the rider parked the two-wheeler at the rear of Bondel Gate, took off his helmet and walked towards Ballygunge station. Investigators believe the suspects fled from there on a local train.
The probe also led investigators to a middleman who acted as a link between Md Afroz alias Gulzar and criminals of Bihar’s dreaded Pappu Chowdhury Gang. This middleman, lodged in Beur jail in Bihar, is also accused of committing a murder in Patna. During Durga Puja, this middleman reportedly came to Kolkata to conduct a reconnaissance of the Kasbah area, including Ghosh’s residence. “It is through him that Gulzar was in touch with the Bihar gang,” said a senior officer at Lalbazar.
“All the suspects involved in this crime or part of the Bihar gang are trained shooters. In fact, Yuvraj, the gunman who was arrested, was the only newcomer. The others have more than thirty criminal cases of murder, kidnapping and murder. riots against them. We are trying to arrest them as soon as possible,” the officer said.
The investigation also revealed that no one named Iqbal was involved in the attack. “Iqbal’s real name is different. He operated under the alias Iqbal. The blueprint for the attack was prepared over a period of two months. Sources from Lalbazar report that this man, under the pseudonym Iqbal, ensured that the attackers could remain in prison. Iqbal’s name came up during the interrogation of an attacker who was arrested on Friday.
Police said Ghosh’s claims about the warehouse appear to be prima facie true. “50% of it is on government-acquired land, the other half is for agriculture,” police said.
