AR Rahman’s wife Saira Banu announced her divorce from the composer, director and singer on Tuesday after 29 years of marriage, Indian media reported.

Banu’s lawyer issued a statement to media outlet India Today. The statement cited an “emotional strain” that affected their nearly three-decade marriage.

The couple has three children together: Khatija, Raheema and Ameen.

“After many years of marriage, Mrs. Saira has taken the difficult decision to divorce her husband, Mr. AR Rahman. This decision comes after significant emotional strain in their relationship,” the statement said.

“Despite their deep love for each other, the couple has found that the tensions and difficulties have created an insurmountable chasm between them, a chasm that neither party believes they can bridge at this time. Ms. Saira emphasized that she made this decision out of pain. and pain,” it added.

“Ms. Saira requests privacy and public understanding during this challenging time as she navigates this difficult chapter of her life.”
