Amazon driver allegedly killed pedestrian and then continued on delivery route

A 79-year-old Georgia woman is dead after an Amazon delivery driver allegedly struck and killed her — and then continued on his delivery route, authorities said.

London Best, 24, of Alpharetta, was arrested on Tuesday, Nov. 12, and charged with first-degree murder and hit-and-run resulting in death in connection with the death of Sandra Fitts of Canton, according to the Cherokee Sheriff’s Office. in a statement to PEOPLE.

Fitts had just visited the grave of a loved one and was crossing the street when she was struck and killed Atlanta Journal-Constitution, WSB TV, WSAZ 3 reported.

On the night of November 12, around 6:30 PM local time, officers responded to a report of a crash involving a pedestrian on Cumming Highway near Jordan Lane.

Officers who responded to the scene reportedly found evidence that the vehicle involved in the crash may have been an Amazon van, according to the Sheriff’s Office.

“A deputy observed an Amazon truck turning onto Bishop Drive while responding to the crash and requested assistance from the area to search for the vehicle,” the Sheriff’s Office said in their statement.

According to the Sheriff’s Office, a Canton police officer found an Amazon truck on Bishop Drive with damage consistent with evidence at the crash scene.

“The investigation determined that the Amazon truck in question was the vehicle that struck the pedestrian,” the statement said.

Best, the driver of the vehicle, was arrested and charged in connection with the collision.

“If he had not left the scene, the charges would have been different. He likely would not have committed any crimes,” Capt. Jay Baker, a spokesman for the Cherokee County Sheriff’s Office, said, per Fox 5 Atlanta.

Additional charges were filed against Best after investigators obtained a search warrant for the van he was driving in which narcotics were allegedly found, the sheriff’s office said in the statement.

He faces new charges of possession of marijuana less than 1 oz., possession of a Schedule 1 narcotic (THC wax) and possession of drug-related objects.

Best is being held without bond at the Cherokee Adult Detention Center. It is unclear whether he has retained an attorney who can speak on his behalf.

An Amazon spokesperson said Best will no longer be able to make deliveries for the company pending the outcome of the investigation, Fox 5 Atlanta reported.
