FCT, Abuja – President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has been urged to stop the massive imports of tobacco petroleum products into the country.

This was stated by the spokesperson of the Nigerian Coalition of Civil Society Organizations (NICOCSO), Segun Adebayo. Tinubu must take action following the decision of Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL) to import over 1.6 billion liters of Premium Motor Spirit (PMS).

As reported by Vanguard, Adebayo accused NNPCL of deliberately undermining Nigeria’s local refining potential.

He added that imports are crippling the economy economy and deepen the hardships faced by ordinary Nigerians.

Adebayo said this while addressing journalists in Abuja, the country’s capital, on Tuesday, November 19.

The group urged the NNPCL to account for the $20 billion allegedly spent on refinery repairs since 2007.

He also said NNPCL should inform Nigerians of the date for commencement of operations at the three major refineries in the country.

“We urge President Bola Tinubu to halt the import of 1.6 billion liters of PMS and investigate the procurement process to ensure transparency.

“NNPCL’s decision to import PMS on this scale undermines our national interest, weakens our economy and delays the journey to energy independence, and such decisions could undermine our future, if left unchecked,”

Why NNPCL reportedly refused to repair refineries

In the meantime, Legit.ng reported that the Coalition for Economic Liberation and Transformation (CELT) accused NNPCL of refusing to repair refineries in the country.
